St. Thomas Lutheran School Re-opening Plan
July 31, 2020
We look forward to the start of a new year, knowing that it will look different from any other year. We have put so much thought and care into this plan as the health and safety of our students, families, and staff are our highest concerns.
We have continually monitored the rules, guidelines, and regulations that have come from our Governor, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, the Ohio Department of Education, the Centers for Disease Control, and the American Academy of Pediatrics to make a plan to reopening our school as safely as possible.
Understanding that these things change quickly, going forward we will continue to monitor guidelines set forth by the Cuyahoga County Board of Health and the Ohio Department of Education. This situation is evolving, and it may be necessary in the future to amend these plans based on new information or a change in circumstance.
Health and Safety Protocols
Parents are responsible for providing daily health assessments and screening of symptoms. Additionally, daily temperature checks will occur upon entry of the school building. Staff will take their own temperatures before reporting to school. Staff or students will stay home if above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit and/or if experiencing other symptoms. Staff and students who are ill must stay home from school and will be sent home if they become ill at school, particularly if they have COVID-19 symptoms. While waiting to go home, ill persons will continue to wear a face mask and be placed in a separate isolation room overseen by school personnel who are also wearing appropriate PPE.
Daily Health Assessment
- Fever of 100.0 degrees or chills.
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
- Muscle or body aches.
- Loss of taste or smell.
- Sore throat.
- Congestion or runny nose.
- Nausea or vomiting.
Anyone displaying symptoms is instructed to contact their healthcare provider and seek testing.
Individuals who test positive, or are suspected to have COVID-19, or who have not been cleared in writing by a medical professional, must report their illness to St. Thomas Lutheran ECC, and must quarantine at home for 14 days.
Individuals who are cleared, in writing, of COVID-19 by their healthcare provider, may return to school when they are symptom free and fever free without medication for 24 hours.
Individuals who have been exposed to COVID-19 are required to inform St. Thomas Lutheran ECC, and must quarantine at home for 14 days.
If a student or staff member test positive for COVID-19,or is diagnosed with COVID-19 by their healthcare provider, they are required to inform St. Thomas ECC, and will be required to quarantine for 14 days.
St. Thomas Lutheran ECC will inform school families of a suspected or positive case of COVID-19. The Cuyahoga County Board of Health will also be informed, and we will cooperate with them to determine the steps necessary to prevent spread of the virus.
Personnel and students with confirmed or presumed COVID-19 must meet conditions prescribed by the Ohio Department of Health and the Cuyahoga County Board of Health departments prior to returning to school. These conditions may change frequently, and we will maintain frequent communication with these departments regarding these guidelines.
Kindergarten students that are healthy enough are encouraged to keep up with assignments and engage with Mrs. Ressler via google classroom.
Emphasis on Good Hygiene Practices
Hand sanitizer (60-95% alcohol based) and sanitizing products will be available for personnel and students, especially in high traffic areas, including at each school entrance and in every classroom. Students will be required to use hand sanitizing stations when entering the school. Additionally students and staff will wash their hands upon entering a classroom, after toileting or coming in contact with bodily fluids, when visibly dirty, before and after eating, and before leaving the building. Water fountains will be turned off. Students should bring their own personal water bottles and can refill them throughout the school day.
Visitors will not be allowed in the building except in cases of emergency.
Regular evening cleanings will continue. Our cleaning team uses products deemed effective to eliminate COVID-19 and other contaigens. Cleaning supplies are available in classrooms, to be used whenever students are sharing spaces, furnishings, or materials in rotation. Teachers will create routines appropriate for their classrooms to ensure cleanliness of shared materials. Such routines may include the cleaning and sanitizing of materials immediately following their use, or the removal of those materials from the classroom until they are sanitized. High touch surfaces (door knobs, railings, etc.) throughout the facility will be routinely cleaned by the staff throughout the day.
Cleanings will be logged. Wherever possible, students will be given their own materials, such as crayons, pencils, manipulatives.
- Full day pre-k students should plan to arrive between 8:00-8:15
- ½ day pre-k and 3’s (including those using preschool enrichment) should plan to arrive between 8:15-8:30
- Kindergarten students will arrive between 8:15-8:30
- Preschool/PreKindergarten: Door B (regular school entrance)
- Kindergarten: West door (church entrance)
Parents should remain in the car. Students will enter the building, following their screening, independently, with help from staff as needed.
Children will be picked up at the same door they were dropped off.
- Full day pre-k students will be dismissed from 2:45-3:00
- ½ day prek and 3’s students will be dismissed between 11:00-11:15
- Preschool enrichment students will be dismissed between 3:00-3:15.
- Kindergarten students will be dismissed between 3:00-3:15.
Late Arrival/Early Dismissal
For late arrivals, parents will call from their car, and staff will come out to do a temperature check and escort the student into the building. Parents will not enter the building.
Parents of students being dismissed early should provide advance notice to the school office. When the parent arrives, they may call the office. The student will be escorted to their vehicle.
Children will be distanced as much as possible, and visual cues will be placed on the floor to help facilitate this. Kindergarten children will each have an individual lapdesk to work at placed more than 6 feet apart.
Staff will be required to wear face masks at all times in the building, unless they are working alone in a room. Students will be required to wear a face mask when they enter and exit the building. They will then hang their mask on a special hook under their belongings.
- Parents will need to provide an extra mask as well (to be kept in with their extra clothes) should the mask they are wearing become soiled.
- Masks are most comfortable when they are well fit. Please spend this time before school begins to work with your child on the proper way to put on and take off a mask, and have them spend time getting used to wearing it.
We believe in-person learning is best for our students. It is our intent to be in school five days a week from 8:15- 3:00 as allowable and safe. However, should the Ohio Department of Education or the Cuyahoga County Board of Health deem it necessary to close our building or an individual classroom, we will switch to an online model. We would also switch to an online model in the event that our County has a health rating of 4/purple, or if we are unable to continue in-person safely.
Lunch and snack will be parent provided. Students will eat in their own classroom to allow for proper distancing.
Chapel will be recorded and watched in each individual classroom.
